  • Image Processing
  • Realizing Comparison Investigations
  • Use of Resulting Images
  • Expert Testimony Preparation and Examination Work Sheet Printing

RASTR from PAPILLON SYSTEMS offers the tools for illustrating fingerprint and palmprint, ballistics, handwriting and trace examination procedures and preparing printouts for expert reports on identification of cold arms, firearms, handwriting, stamps and seals, on microscopic investigations of all kinds, etc.

RASTR is especially useful for experts as it saves time, facilitate certain examination procedures and improve productivity.

The process of preparing illustrations for examination reports takes plenty of time. RASTR is a firmware dedicated to facilitating, expediting and automating that specific task of the expert's activities.

Utilizing the state-of-the-art computer facilities in daily routine enables the experts to obtain images from various sources and of different origin, not using customary photography only, and to apply up-to-the-minute methods and algorithms for their processing and investigation.

The RASTR developers, after poring on the experts' tasks and needs, have united some features of different programs, those of booking, processing, analyzing, image storing and preparing documents, into one system. RASTR offers the expert all that is needed for the work and nothing superfluous.

RASTR provides a capability to feed images into a computer, taking them from different sources, without connecting any auxiliary drivers and devices. RASTR combines the functions of a comparison microscope, features of a powerful graphics editor, as regards the image processing, and those of a text editor in the range that necessary for the expert to prepare work sheets. RASTR offers the tools for arranging and supporting any number of databases containing images, original and handled, and documents prepared for printing.

    System Composition:

  • PAPILLON TVC-9 telecamera with 33 mm objective
  • PAPILLON FrameGrabber
  • PAPILLON Camera-and-Object Holder
  • Software including frame-grabber drivers and RASTR for Windows application suite
  • On clearing with a customer, the above delivery set may be changed.

Image Entry

  • RASTR allows for the entry of both black-and-white images and color images.
  • The images may be derived from the following sources.
  • BMP/TIFF/JPEG-files
  • PAPILLON AFIS and PAPILON ARSENAL files
  • System clipboard
  • Flatbed scanners, digital cameras and other devices using TWAIN-interface
  • Video cameras, video recorders. Video signal is inputted via devices supported by MCI-drivers or via PAPILLON FrameGrabber
  • PAPILLON TVC-9, an up-to-date high-resolution telecamera designed at the enterprise, is attached also via PAPILLON FrameGrabber.

Image Processing

By using the powerful tools RASTR offers for processing original images, you can get excellent illustrations for expert reports.

Geometrical transformations of an image

  • Zooming
  • Rotation
  • Mirroring (vertical and horizontal)
  • Scissoring

Image enhancement

  • Equalization
  • Negative imaging
  • Intensity histogram transformation
  • Color transformation
  • Filtering
  • Original images based in RASTR are never subjected to changes.
  • When processing, the system allows canceling any number of transformations even though performed during previous sessions.

Realizing Comparison Investigations

RASTR enables the expert to examine two images at once without using a comparison microscope and provides all tools, not available before, ensuring quality and quick work.

RASTR enables the user to correlate and compare two images in applying any processing operations to either of them. Comparison is performed using a side-by-side image display on the screen and either aligning them vertically (the vertical line separates two images) or overlapping.

The result of such superimposition may be used as a single whole for further action.

While comparing, the expert can fulfill any of the following. Use any of 14 modes for image integration in the area of overlap (alternation, half-sum, subtraction, etc.) Assign a mask with reverse transparency to superimpose two images in the complex line of division Overlay two images according to characteristic points

Use of Resulting Images

A resulting image, made by overlaying, can be.

Used when originating an expert report directly in the RASTR system

Exported in a standard format file (BMP, TIFF, JPEG)

Exported in an FBI-format file (CJIS-RS-0010 (V7))

Placed to the system clipboard for transferring to another application (graphics editor, text processor, etc.)

Examination Report Preparation

RASTR is very useful for preparing evidence examination work sheets.

The system enables the user to create multipage documents, insert original and processed images in them, use lines, notes, rectangles, inscriptions with the font choice ability and ability to setup color and background, as elements of design.

An expert can quickly originate a required document by arranging necessary images, resizing and relocating them, providing with explanatory notes.

Standard tools of the operational system and a laser printer are utilized to print a desired number of paper copies.
